Nmble Medical is partnering with a leading ophthalmology and specialty healthcare practice to deliver exceptional patient care through outstanding clinical talent. We are seeking a compassionate, detail-oriented Ophthalmic Assistant to join a respected ophthalmology practice serving the Charlotte metropolitan area.
This role offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced ophthalmologists and subspecialists while developing advanced clinical and diagnostic skills in a fast-paced, patient-centered environment.
Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinical Support
Welcome, room, and prepare patients for ophthalmic examinations and procedures.
Obtain and accurately document patient medical history, surgical history, medications, allergies, chief complaints, and HPI within the electronic health record.
Measure and record vital signs as appropriate.
Educate patients regarding testing, treatment plans, medications, and post-procedure instructions.
Respond to patient questions and assist with patient communication through phone and EHR messaging.
Diagnostic Testing
Perform comprehensive ophthalmic testing including:
Visual acuity assessment
Confrontation visual fields
Pupil evaluation
Tonometry
Ocular motility testing
Refraction
Keratometry
Lensometry
Pachymetry
Color vision testing
Stereo testing
Glare testing
Amsler Grid testing
Schirmer testing
Perform advanced diagnostic imaging and specialty testing including:
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
Visual Field Testing
Corneal Topography
Pentacam Imaging
Biometry and surgical measurements
Additional testing as directed by the Provider
Provider Support
Assist Providers during examinations, treatments, laser procedures, injections, and in-office surgical procedures.
Administer ophthalmic medications as directed.
Function as a medical scribe when needed to ensure accurate and timely documentation.
Prepare procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment.
Clinic Operations
Schedule appointments, procedures, testing, and surgeries.
Manage Provider schedules and patient flow.
Maintain work queues and index clinical documentation within the EHR.
Clean, disinfect, and restock examination rooms and equipment.
Ensure compliance with OSHA, infection control, and safety standards.
Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering clinical supplies.
Participate in onboarding and training of new staff members.
Collaboration
Work closely with Providers, technicians, surgery coordinators, and administrative staff to ensure efficient clinic operations.
Travel to other practice locations within the Charlotte market as needed.
Qualifications
Required
High School Diploma or GED
Minimum of 1 year of experience in Ophthalmology or Optometry
Strong communication and patient service skills
Basic computer and EHR proficiency
Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment
Ability to travel between clinic locations as needed
Preferred
ICA-accredited Ophthalmic Assistant training
IJCAHPO or AAO independent study program completion
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)
Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)
BLS Certification
Experience with ophthalmic imaging and specialty testing
Surgical ophthalmology experience
